30 Day MTMTE Challenge – Day 7

A Heartwarming Scene

There have been lots of emotional moments throughout the story so far, but there have only been a handful of what I’d consider “heartwarming”. Most of the emotions that I get reading this comic are sadness or humor. Still my favorite heartwarming scene is when Rewind’s “message from the grave” stops Chromedome from erasing his memory – again.

Rewind saves Chromdome

Even after tragedy, love lives on.

Best Issue So Far

There are so many great issues in this series, it’s difficult to pick just one as the best. I’m going with issue #13 – Cybertronian Homesick Blues.

MTMTE Issue 13 Cover

Can you guess who’s who?

This issue is told mostly through flashback from the viewpoint of Swerve as he’s sending a message to Blurr, back on Cybertron. We first see some commotion coming from Cyclonus and Tailgate’s room and find out that it was just Cyclonus singing in Old Cybertronian.

Then the crew gets to go on shore leave to relax a little bit, even though Ultra Magnus doesn’t recognize that as a word. Naturally, hijinks ensue. We get to see their new Super Intuitive holomatter Avatars which are supposed to reflect the users’ psyches. For some it’s expected like Rung, Swerve and Rewind. I think the best, by far, was Whirl’s.

Whirl's Holomatter Avatar

A hyperactive child with an eye patch and guns -unmistakably Whirl.

Then, the combined efforts of Whirl (intentional) and Swerve (unintentional) get Ultra Magnus passed-out drunk! It’s great because of the reactions of everyone and the dialog between Ultra Magnus and Swerve. This is where we learn quite a bit more about both of these characters and what makes them tick.

As the night comes to a close and Ultra Magnus is passed out again, the crew needs to find a way to get him back and how they do is nothing short of hilarious.

Hopping on Ultra Magnus

I hope Rewind’s not recording this!

A special bonus prose story at the end of the issue describes what the others were doing while Swerve was left alone with Ultra Magnus – browsing in the gift shop – and a section with Rung talking with Ultra Magnus including the latter’s failed attempts at humor.

30 Day MTMTE Challenge – Day 5

Favorite DJD Member

Sure Helex has his own smelting pool, Kaon has his sparkeater pet, Tesarus has that grinder thing in his chest and Vos has that face, but Tarn wins my vote because he can kill with his voice!

Tarn

My spark just shrank a little by hearing that.

This guy has a double fusion cannon on his arm, wears the Decepticon insignia on his face and is a ruthless killing machine, but he still appreciates the finer things in life like music and literature. He is also Megatron’s number one fanbot – he regularly quotes from Megatron’s writings and even took his name from Megatron’s home city-state. His, and the rest of the DJD’s, methods are so cruel and painful that everyone, Autobot and Decepticon alike fear them.

Tarn

You don’t want to see this in your rearview mirror!

Favorite Scavenger

Honestly, I’m not that big a fan of the Scavengers. Don’t get me wrong, I like them, but their story has kind of been a throwaway for me so far since it hasn’t really contributed anything to the main story of the comic. I might change my mind if they ever manage to bring themselves and Grimlock into the fold of the main story. But I have to pick one, so I’ll pick Spinister. This big, dumb, trigger-happy bot really brought a smile to my face every time I saw him on the page.

Spinister Infodump

Fingers are Amazing!

He’s simple minded and violent – almost the Decepticon equivalent of the G1 Dinobots. That being the case, I thought it was fitting that the group ended up finding Grimlock and have taken him in a part of their group, even if it’s only as an insurance policy right now.

Probably the biggest reason I chose Spinister – I still have his G1 toy from when I was a kid.

Favorite Pairing

This was a little tough since there are so many great pairings in MTMTE – Chromedome and Rewind, Cyclonus and Tailgate, Rodimus and Drift – but I think the one that I like best is Whirl and Cyclonus.

Whirl and Cyclonus

Even the spilled energon is complementary!

There has been nothing but tension in this relationship and, even though they have come to respect each other through many shared battles, I don’t see that tension ending any time soon. It certainly makes for entertaining reading. When is Cyclonus going to make good on his threat to kill Whirl? What insane thing is Whirl going to do next to try to beat Cyclonus to the punch? Sure they made up after the battle on Luna 1, but there has to still be some animosity, or at least uneasiness, deep inside each one. I hope Cyclonus makes it back from the Dead Universe when Dark Cybertron is over because I will really miss this pairing if he doesn’t.

30 Day MTMTE Challenge – Day 2

Least favorite character on the Lost Light crew.

The unknown guy that hits Drift over the head with a pipe after he was banished for bringing Overlord on board.

Drift

Head’s up!

It’s perfectly understandable for the crew to be upset since they don’t know the whole story. But we do. At this point we already knew that Chromedome and Brainstorm were in on it as well (and the Duobots – Shock and Ore – but they’re already dead). Of course, later on, we find out that there were others that were involved with bringing Overlord on board too and that Drift willingly took the blame to spare the others. That was very noble and I hope that it’s not the last we see of Drift.

30 Day MTMTE Challenge – Day 1

I’ve been following MTMTE since the beginning. I mean even before it was MTMTE (wait, sorry, that’s Day 12). So Day 1 – Favorite character on the Lost Light crew.

This was a tough one because there are so many great ones. I’ve always been a fan of Rodimus and Whirl is fantastic. However, my favorite is this guy:

Cyclonus running

Horn-head coming through!

Cyclonus

Cyclonus is another long-time favorite of mine and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching his transition from a grumpy, isolated jerk into what he has become – one of the true heroes of the crew.

Sure he is still pretty much a jerk, but you can’t change who you are. Still, when he joined the Lost Light, he wanted nothing to do with anyone, but now he has come to develop a bond with Tailgate to the point that he truly cares about him – so much so that he risked his spark to save Tailgate’s life.

So, there you go. Favorite Lost Light crew member: Cyclonus. (Even if I was a bit wary of him at first…)

Hoist and Cyclonus

Uh, hi.

Transformers Comics – Autobot Megatron?

Growing up, I didn’t read a lot of comics. The ones that I do remember were my G1 Transformers comics. I never had a lot and I don’t have them anymore, but I read them a lot! Fast forward about two decades and I was ecstatic when I found the Transformers Comics app for my iPad. I was able to get all those old comics and get caught up on the ones that I missed. It sure filled in a bunch of gaps about some of the toys I have gotten recently, like Thunderwing, Darkmount (Straxus) and others in the Generations line.

But the ones that REALLY got me hooked this time are the new comics. I found them when they were in the middle of the Transformers ongoing series. I loved them so much that I went and got all of the back issues and have been getting the new ones right as soon as they come out. I like the fact that they are modern stories using the G1 characters that we all know and love, but they have a different spin. I think my favorites are the origin stories that are set in the past on Cybertron either before or at the beginning of the war. Megatron Origins is superb. I gotta say that reading that comic made me want to sympathize with the Decepticon cause.

Like may other Transformers fans, I have been hooked on the two current series: Robots In Disguise and More Than Meets The Eye. I tend to like MTMTE more than RID, but I can’t miss an issue of either series. Now the Dark Cybertron story arc is in progress and I like how the two series are overlapping.

The big story now is the anticipation of what comes next. IDW certainly helped with that by tweeting a few covers of the issues that will follow the Dark Cybertron arc. One of them is:

Autobot Megatron

Yeah. Megatron is an Autobot! What is this, some alternate universe? When I first saw this shared on Facebook, I didn’t even notice the Autobrand. I only noticed when I saw someone else’s comment and was very surprised and intrigued. Then, my next thought was “way to spoil it guys!” The last we saw of Megatron was him getting ripped in half by Galvatron an issue or two ago. Then again, this is Transformers – Optimus Prime and Megatron are killed regularly and never stay dead. They are the main characters; of course they won’t stay dead. I just hope this doesn’t mean Rodimus and/or Ultra Magnus are going to be gone. I have always liked those guys and it has really made MTMTE enjoyable. They are both franchise characters too so I expect them to still be with us in some capacity.

I have to hand it to those crafty writers over at IDW. They are definitely keeping us guessing!
